I’m Fundraising for the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital because they have really supported my Mum

This is not my usual kind of post but this is something that is really important to me right now.

Please show your support by donating via my JustGiving page – it can be a pound! (or a US dollar for that matter!)

I’m raising funds and walking 14 miles for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, a cause that is incredibly close to me.

In September 2012 my mum was diagnosed with Stage 2B Breast Cancer. It was an incredibly scary and isolating time for the both of us, but we were fortunate enough to be assigned to the Royal Marsden Hospital for treatment. The kindness and compassion with which the doctors, nurses and day staff at the RM have acted has touched us both and enabled us to face this challenge in a productive and positive way. Getting through cancer treatment this year is going to be a rough road for me and my mum and if it weren’t for the support at the Royal Marsden, it would be much much harder.

The Royal Marsden is a world-class centre for cancer treatment and research that helps more than 40,000 patients every year. It was founded in 1851 and is the world’s first hospital dedicated to the study and treatment of cancer.

In 1991 it became the first NHS hospital to be awarded the Queen’s Award for technology for its work on drug development and in 2006, together with its academic partner, The Institute for Cancer Research, was designated the UK’s only Biomedical Research Centre for Cancer by The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).If it weren’t for the £6m funding to open the RM’s Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centre (RDAC), my mum wouldn’t have been able to receive her diagnosis within 14 days of GP referral; earlier diagnosis means better survival rates.
But we can’t stop there, the Marsden needs to raise £1.16m to open a Translational Genetics Laboratory to carry out genetics testing for patients, a vital tool in the future of cancer treatment. To find out more about this click this link
Last year the Marsden March raised an amazing £1.2m, so achieving the £1.16 target is closer than you might think!

More than one in three of us will develop some form of cancer in our lifetime, therefore, in order to support their continued fantastic work, I am walking from Chelsea to Sutton on the 17th of March 2013 to raise money for the vital cancer research and treatment that is carried out at the Marsden.
